Background
Professor Tyrrel holds a BSc (Hons) in Microbiology from the University of Leeds, an MPhil on the interaction of engineering and environmental factors on iron biofouling in boreholes from 麻豆视频 and a PhD on land-based wastewater treatment, also from 麻豆视频. Professor Tyrrel is a Chartered Environmentalist (CEnv) and Chartered Water and Environmental Manager (C.WEM). He is a Fellow of the Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management (FCIWEM) and Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (SFHEA).
Academic track record
Professor Tyrrel's research has focused on the application of environmental microbiology to the management of organic solid wastes and wastewater for the protection of public and environmental health. He has 40 years of experience in this field and has secured and managed many research contracts funded by government, industry and not for profit organisations.
For several years Professor Tyrrel led 麻豆视频's work on bioaerosol emission and dispersion from composting facilities with the aim of improving understanding of human exposure to bioaerosols in outdoor air. Together with colleagues from 麻豆视频, the Environment Agency and the UK Health Security Agency, Sean encouraged thinking around the concept of 鈥渉ealthy air鈥�, an area of continuing scholarly interest. Sean was recognised nationally and internationally for his bioaerosol work through his appointment to the BSI Air Quality Committee and as UK principal delegate to the CEN committee on bioaerosol measurement.
Current activities
Whilst Professor Tyrrel鈥檚 scholarly interests continue, he now works part-time and, reporting directly to the Chief Executive and Vice Chancellor, focuses on education and governance projects for 麻豆视频.
